About Us
Background on BUVAD and Kayunga:
Butakoola Village Association for Development is a registered Community Based Organization (CBO), which started its development works in 2000 hence the name BUVAD_2000. BUVAD_2000 carries on its development work within the District of Kayunga.
Butakoola village, the pilot project area and origin of BUVAD_2000 is located in a rural area 50 miles away from Kampala in Kayunga district. It’s habited by 300 homes with a total population of 1,843 people.
Kayunga district has a total population of 297,081 people, of which 144,609 are male and 152,472 are female (2002 population census). The urbanization level is 6.7 percent indicating that the majority of the population lives in rural areas. It has a mixture of 52 tribes some of which are from the neighboring countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and as far as India.
Of the total District population 0.88% come from Butakoola village. Most of the families in this village are low income earning groups - they cannot manage a balanced diet, cannot pay school fees for children going beyond the government’s Universal Primary Education system (UPE), and lack the knowledge to manage an income-generating project. Originally these people had coffee as a source of income but this has been frustrated by an attack of coffee wilt disease. The staple foods and would be substitute for income generation, Banana and cassava, have been attacked by the banana wilt and cassava mosaic. Quarantine has been put on these foodstuffs from being sold outside the district.
Other problems, many of which have occurred as direct and indirect results of the diseases, have led to an unacceptable situation for the residents of this area.
Some of the problems include night robbery, food theft, lack of beddings and clothing, drug abuse in youths, child labour, high vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, early marriages and early pregnancies.
The village is faced with poor communication facilities and an unavailability of basic facilities like health centers, schools, a power supply, access to safe-clean water, low food supply and inconvenient banking facilities.
The above problems created a concern within the community, leading to the formation of BUVAD_2000 whose mission is:
“To promote human values for people within Kayunga District in Uganda - East Africa so that they may realize their full potential towards development”
Our team is made up entirely of volunteers. We advocate for those who need our help. Even a little help goes a long way.
That is why we are especially happy to find new volunteers who share our commitment to doing good in the world. Do you want to support us by helping with our work? Then do not hesitate to contact us. A helping hand is always greatly appreciated!
Please refer to our “Projects” page to see how BUVAD is responding to its community.
In June/July of 2009, BUVAD carried out a baseline survey of its focal community. Many of the facts and statistics used in the recently completed Five Year Strategic Plan were taken from the results.
