Sun Flower growing for cooking oil extraction program

BUVAD is establishing a co-op for local farmers that will enable them to produce cooking oil from Sunflower seeds.
The idea was met locally with great enthusiasm and BUVAD has a committed buyer for the product in Kampala.
Sunflower growth offers an opportunity to get away from the decreasing yields utilizing traditional perennial crops. Sunflowers are low maintenance with two harvesting seasons in one year. The resulting oil is a healthier alternative, as it is cholesterol free.
BUVAD maintains a structure that can be used to house the extracting machine and bottling process.
By participating in this co-op, BUVAD intends to use the funds received for paying its administrative costs and salaries.
This co-op offers true stability and a progressive alternative to local farmers who are ready and willing to undertake this new project. While water remains BUVAD’s number one priority, this project has the potential to truly change life for everyone in these villages. As there is a ready market to exploit, BUVAD sees this as a project that can be established in all parts of Kayunga District.
BUVAD seeks funding that will cover start up expense, the cost of the extractor, and the donation of seeds for participating farmers.
Any volunteers with a marketing background in products from developing countries interested in advising BUVAD on future strategies are most welcome. This is an opportunity to volunteer from home or here in Uganda. Please see our volunteer page for more details.
